The Disappearances of Elijah “Bear” Diaz and Skylar Peterson Tosic

Hey everyone,
I just recently watched the Disappeared episode Every Mother’s Son based on the disappearance of Elijah “Bear” Diaz. I did a search on here and surprisingly couldn’t find any posts, so I decided to make my own write up.
Background Information: Elijah “Bear” Diaz, (also known as Bear) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 6 years old. He would give himself insulin shots three times everyday. He was also constantly in the hospital and missed a lot of school. Because of this his family decided to let him drop out of school and get his GED. He was a part of the Barona Tribe of Native Americans in Southern California. Because of this he received a monthly check from the casino on the reservation. He used this money to buy a house in El Cajon. He seemed to be very trusting of people, especially his friends and was very generous. He paid for a lot of things for his friends and even some random people. There were always people at his house. If friends needed a place to stay he would let them stay the night. Less than a year before he disappeared his step brother committed suicide. Bear and his step brother were very close and this effected him deeply. Bear also struggled with depression. He wanted things to be different with his health. Despite his health he wanted to live life to the fullest and just wanted to be normal. He didn’t like people to see him sad or uncomfortable.
Disappearance: On August 29, 2015 Bear had spent some time with extended family. Throughout the evening Bear started to become agitated and wanted to go home. At the time he had Neuropathy, which left his feet to be weak and constantly in pain. He was using crutches to get around and would have to be driven everywhere he went. His mom drove him home that night. They arrived at Bear’s house at about 10pm and no one else was home at the time. His mother suggested enrolling in school to meet new friends with common interests. She knew he was upset, and was trying to keep his hopes up and look forward to something new. But Bear wasn’t in the mood to talk about it that night. His mother said that he was confrontational and said that she didn’t understand, he wished he was healthy and had friends to hang out with. She left at 10:30 to let him cool down. She locked the house on the way out. She texted him when she got home to tell him she made it home safe. He texted back right away saying I love you mom. August 30, 2015 Bear’s mother texts him in the the morning, but he doesn’t respond. She drives to his house at 3:30 pm. She lets herself into his house but sees no sign of Bear. She notices that his tv, blankets, crutches, backpack with wallet and an estimate of about one-two weeks worth of insulin were gone along with about $7,000 from his safe. His glasses and phone charger were left behind. His mom talked to a roommate who said he got home about 2:30am the night before and hadn’t seen Bear or heard him leave. She holds out hope and decides to wait until the next morning to resume the search. He had doctors appointments the next day. He knew how important his appointments were and would not miss them. His mom drives to the first appointment and talks to the receptionist who says he hadn’t made it to his appointment. She then goes to another appointment later in the day with the same results. His mom then goes to local sheriff department, they take the report but wait to file it since he is a young man with money and is most likely just taking a break from his life. Mom then calls and texts friends and family to see if anyone has heard from him. No one has. She knows he would never voluntarily miss the annual powwow at the Borona Reservation so she holds out hope until the following weekend. At the powwow she sets up a both for him and hands out homemade missing persons posters to get the word out. His mom makes another report to police. Police go to the house take pictures of the outside and inside, and use an alternate light source to see if there was any evidence of a crime scene. They see no evidence of a struggle or that anything took place there. The police find lots of fingerprints because of all the people in and out of his house, so the police couldn’t rely on those. Police interviewed roommates who gave them nothing. They said it was not unusual for him to leave and that he would come back. Police check phone records and find that around 1:30am the night he went missing his phone pinged at the Borona Reservations casino. About 20mins later it pinged in the Santa Ysabel area. This is a small isolated town that leads to the San Diego mountains. This is about 40 miles north east of his home. Police made a search of the area, but the terrain was too rugged for their cars. There are lots of animals in the area that could possibly move a body. They used two helicopters to search the area. They find no signs that people had even been up there. Bear’s family and friends also searched with no leads. Bear’s biological father helped as well and followed up on possible sightings of Bear, but they all lead to dead ends. Police believe that someone helped Bear get out of his house that night or that he was forced to leave his house since his injury left him unable to do so himself. They believe that someone knows something and that it’s just a matter of them coming forward.
Skylar Peterson Tosic: 20 year old Skalr Peterson Tosic went missing on August 30, 2015 from Escondido, California. He had just returned home from spending two nights in the San Pasqual Valley. He said he had been hanging out with new friends named Thaddeus and Eli, who his mom had never met. Skylar’s mother had some work to do that day, but said she would be back shortly to catch up with him. She left him with her mother and boyfriend. When she came back he was gone. She texted him and he didn’t text back until 8pm that night. He said he was with Thaddeus and Eli again and there were two girls with them who were rich and were offering him travel and vacation time on them. He also said they had passports and were connected. He said he was independent and was going to go with them. He said that it was spiritual fun with no drugs. He starts to text her where they are going, but the text stops mid sentence before he tells her where. She tries to to call him back right away, he doesn’t respond. She texts him multiple times saying that these people are trying to brainwash him. Still no response. She called the cops who took down a police report, but said they couldn’t do much because he is over the age of 18 and could come and go as he pleases. She does som research and finds out that he took an Uber from her house to a stop sign just past the San Pasqual Academy off of the 78 highway. When he left he asked His mother’s boyfriend for a flashlight and his grandma for a roll of toilet paper. He also took his toothbrush, toothpaste, cell phone, and charger with him, but left his wallet, ID, and his bank card. Soon after Skylar went missing, Olivia was watching the news when she realized that a young man who looked very similar to her son went missing the day before her son did. This was Elijah Bear Diaz. She immediately realized the similarities between this young man and her son and thought that since the other missing young mans name was Elijah, that this might be the Eli that her son was talking about. She called the El Cajon police and got in contact with Bear’s mother. Both mothers were able to connect on the disappearances of their sons. However the police do not believe that the two disappearances are connected. Olivia believes that her son was involved in something spiritual or a cult when he went missing.
